A monk was on his way from Gothenburg to the monastery of Vadstena. When he came riding down the slopes of mount Fjällbo he heard music and there was a bright light at the foot of the mountain.

He tied his horse to a tree and stealthily crept closer. The mountain had opened itself to a cave and the trolls were having a great feast inside. The light of gold and precious jewels shone out of the cave’s opening and the monk had never seen such beautiful things in his life.

The sight of the troll gold lured him closer and closer to the cave, but suddenly the spell broke and he understood that he was in grave danger. He immediately hurled his cross into the cave. A dull clanking sound was heard and a great thunder of rumbling stone.

The monk lost consciousness. When he came to the trolls were gone and the cave closed and the mountain towered darkly over him. At first he thought that he had dreamt it all, but then he saw a large silver cup sitting at his feet with his cross in it.

That silver cup can now be admired in the church of Vadstena monastery.
