Taming & Breeding Valheim Animals 101
Here's how to tame every animal in Valheim 101 & How to breed them.
Here's how to tame every Valheim animal & how to breed them
There are three different kind of animals that can be tamed.
- Boars
- Wolves
- Lox (They can't breed at the moment)
The general handling to taming is to encage the animal and drop some food from your inventory. Note that the animal will not eat as long as it's aggroed to you. So you can just feed the animal and go a little further sneakily until you see the horizontal bar that confirms that the animal doesn't see you anymore.
You will see yellow hearts above the animal while the taming process is ongoing.
Breed : Once two of the same animals are "happy", which means they just been fed. If they are close enough they will make babies. You can also let them stay hungry forever and it doesn't impact on anything.
Also note that if you have a lot and they don't have enough space really for more, they won't make any babies.
Notes : Animals can't go through portals.

Valheim Boars :

The easiest way to tame boars is to make a fence with an accessible door that they can go through. Once it's done you make the boar(s) chase you in your fence, you get out and you close the door encaging them.
After that you can feed them everything that comes from the ground (mushroom, blueberries, raspberries, carrot, etc) by dropping the food from your inventory into the fence.
It is also possible to drop the food in advance.
Note : I would suggest securing the fence afterwards because it can easily break when being raided.
Side note : You can make the boars go into corridors by chasing them with a torch (they are afraid of fire but still wont attack you once tamed)
One & two star boars : It's the exact same principle. Note that the star boars will give you more food and leather scraps.

Valheim Wolves :

The easiest way to tame wolves is to make a pit up north with your pickaxe. The pit must be deep enough so you have to jump to get out. You can stand in the pit's "wall" until the wolves that are aggroed to you attack you enough so they fall in the pit.
After that you can feed them every kind raw meat (lizard or regular raw meat)
One & two star wolves : Here's the tricky part. Those kind of wolves only spawn during night and want to de-spawn during the day. Here's what you need to do to tame one of those. (I would suggest going straight away for the two stars for it can be a long process.)
Before you start taming the star-wolf, you need to prepare. I would suggest digging enough pit in the mountain of your choice, where you know there's gonna be 2-star wolf spawn.
Also, very important, you must bring a regular wolf that you leave in a cabin either on the mountain or very close to it.
Once everything is ready and you are stacked on raw meat, you go in the mountain at night until you find a two star wolf (they hit hard be aware). You aggro the wolf to your pit until he falls in then you get out (make sure you have enough stamina to get out). Then you throw him some raw meat and you wait using the sneak method told earlier.
Make sure you don't go too far (thus the sneak method) so he doesn't de-spawn but just far enough so he stops aggroing to you.
Then you wait, and you're gonna have to wait a lot since the taming process doesn't work during the daytime but you cant leave his sight / vicinity. It's gonna take about 3 to 4 nights to tame.
Once it's tame, you should move the star-wolf to your cabin, but you should move him only during night time or he's gonna run away. If the taming process ends at the end of a night, I would recommend to wait until the beginning of the next night to move the wolf.
You then bring the wolf to your cabin where your regular normal wolf awaits. You feed them both raw meat until they are happy and start making babies.
Once again, the star-wolf wont eat or make babies during the day.
Once the babies star wolves are born, those will work normally. You can stay there and make some backup ones to be safe. Just wait until one or more babies have grown up and bring them back to your base.
Since animals can't go through portals you're gonna have to walk back to your base. If you have to take a boat back, you can build a small dock above your boat and push the wolves inside. Note that they might aggro to enemies on shore (or sea serpent) and kind of fall into the ocean, but they can swim forever if you have that patience.
The babies coming out of a parent will always be the same as the parent. So if you're two star-wolves has a babies with a regular wolf, you're gonna have a 2 star wolf cub + a regular wolf cub.
I personally killed (nearly) all my regular wolf to only make 2 star wolves cub. I kept one in my bedroom as a souvenir. At this point, it's a personal choice.

Valheim Lox:

Feed them barley or cloudberries. You can sneak close enough to just throw the food on the ground without making any cages. It takes a lot of food but you don't have to be close or whatsoever.
At this moment, Lox won't follow you around nor they will breed so unless it's for fun or a collection of animals (which I encourage!), there is no really usefulness to tame a Lox (for now).
The pit & the cabin :
My cabin had two doors so I could push the tamed wolf in by sprinting behind him if he wasn't going in. You can make it a little more spacious than that.
